Matsuba-gani (Snow crabs)

When the snow crab season opens every year on November 6, the whole town becomes lively. In Kasumi, landed crabs are ranked by size, weight, color, shape, etc. on an 80- to 100-point scale so that ship owners’ family members (mostly women) called serite can sort them out to put them up to auction. Their reliable delicate work supports Kasumi as the best place for crabs. You can enjoy various snow crab dishes at many hotels in the town. (In the San’in region, male zuwai-gani are called matsuba-gani. In Kasumi, female zuwai-gani are called seko-gani) *Snow crab season: November 6 to March 20
